I found this good explanation of how to use air sweepers, since they aren't always very intuitive. A lot of people just don't use them effectively. One thing that this guy doesn't mention is that when you choose which AD or ADs to point your sweeper at, you should not point them towards ADs that are near your queen. The reason for this is that if someone is scouting your base for a LaLoon attack, they want to take out your queen and the nearest AD to her before they start. Having your sweeper pointed at that one is pointless, since that AD will be gone before the air portion of the attack begins.
But now, on to the explanation that I found!
************************************************
I rarely ever see an actually good sweeper. Most sweepers are sitting outside the base doing absolutely nothing. Imo the sweeper is an incredibly strong defense. I mean sweeper is the only defense in the game with crowd control! If anyone here plays league of legend or dota or anything like that then you know that crowd control is everything. You can defend against mass dragons at th7, defend against dragloon at th8, if only you properly use the sweeper. So here is how to use it.
At th7 instead of putting your air defenses symmetrically in a line the best thing you can do is be very lopsided. Both air defenses on one side of the base and on the other side you have the sweeper facing the air defenses.
Absolutely solid th7 air defense. You attack from the side of the air defenses and you face the sweeper the whole time, attack from the side of the sweeper and you'll have air defenses shooting at you as your dragons bang on the town hall.
At th8 it's mostly the same concept except there's two options. Your can have all your air defenses on one side of the town hall and your sweeper on the other:
(imo this is the best air defense a th8 could possibly have). Or you can have two air defenses on one side of the town hall and on the other side an air defense accompanied by a sweeper
Although the first technique is the better one this second one is more easily incorporated into existing bases. You do not want to make an equilateral triangle with your air defenses, you want the try air defenses to be a little closer together than that.
At th9 it changes a bit. Although I suppose you could do something like this:
for the most unstoppable air defense ever but I imagine it would interfere too much with the overall design of the base and make it vulnerable to ground attacks. As a th9 myself what I've always done is place sweeper somewhere in the middle facing towards the center and behind the sweeper put all my air traps behind the sweeper. This way if they think they're clever and attack behind the sweeper they get a nasty surprise and run into every single air trap. Though none of this really matters with the second sweeper coming. The second sweeper actually makes a lot of sense if you really think about it. It's near impossible to have the proper lopsided defense at th9 that you do at th7 and 8. With two sweepers you should be able to cover practically your whole base
