I found this on Supercell forums, and I tend to agree with the point of it
Exclamation Psa: Stop upgrading your defenses!!!
This Public Service Announcement comes to you from a TH8-TH9 clan that aspires to be great at war.
STOP UPGRADING YOUR DEFENSES. JUST STOP IT.
What madness is this? Upgrading defenses has always been the aspiration in Clash of Clans. Who doesn't want dark purple wizard towers or mortars that launch explosives into hordes of unsuspecting, freshly vaporized barchers?
But if you care about war, you'll leave your defenses alone. You'll work on your walls, heroes and troops instead, because these have a lot more to do with the outcome than any upgraded defense ever will.
Assumption 1: 'Clan Strength' as determined by the matchmaking algorithm is largely based on defenses.
That shiny xbow you've just upgraded to level 3 is not neat. It's a huge liability. It's shifted your position on the war map well above your peers, making your at-level opponent harder for you to defeat. This is especially true if you've neglected your troops. (Plus, they totally mock you when you log off for neglecting them. It's true.)
If you have maxed your defenses, without maxing your heroes and troops, YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG.
Assumption 2: Base Layout has more to do with winning on defense than defensive upgrades.
And the single biggest factor when it comes to base layout? Walls. No, you do not need to rush to TH10 to get a pair of infernos. Sure, they'll vaporize the little guys, but you will still get steamrolled by the big ones. Take the coin you'd be spending on rushed defenses, and use it to upgrade your walls instead.
If you have a single defense upgraded at TH9 without 100% skull walls (level 8), YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG.
Assumption 3: OFFENSE wins wars.
To win clan wars, you need the troops to consistently three-star your opponent; and, depending on your clan's war regime, your opponent probably has a similar location on the war map as you. Bumping your defenses puts you higher on the map, and unless you have some hardcore firepower, you will fail there -- both on defense and offense.
If your troops are not capable of three-starring your opponent and you're upgrading defenses, YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We've seen so many TH9's that have poured their lives into defenses whilst completely neglecting their troops. With the new emphasis on Clan Wars via leveling and perks, this is becoming an ever more egregious form of rushing. Not only does it make your war matchups more difficult, it also guarantees that your war log will remain in the red.
Do yourself and the clan you'll be joining a favor. Leave your defenses alone.
Troops > Heroes > Walls > Defenses
And yeah, I know what happens when you assume. This one might be a little over-the-top, but we're seeing first hand what happens when players fail to consider the effect defenses are having on the bigger picture.
